LAWMA Secures One-month Jail Term for Man Who Dumped Waste Illegally in Agege

The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has secured a one-month jail term for a 56-year-old man convicted of illegal waste dumping along the PWD axis of Agege Motor Road in Lagos.

The Authority disclosed this in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, *Mukaila Sanusi*, and made available to journalists on Saturday, July 26, 2026.

According to the statement, the offender, identified as Adebayo Samson, was apprehended by LAWMA’s Monitoring and Enforcement Team on Friday while disposing of refuse at an unauthorised location, in violation of Lagos State environmental laws.

He was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where he pleaded guilty to the offence. The court convicted and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described indiscriminate waste disposal as a serious environmental offence that undermines the state government’s efforts to achieve a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

“I must emphasise that anyone found disposing of waste on roads, road medians, drainage channels, open spaces or any other unauthorised location will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. There will be no exceptions,” Gbadegesin said.

He urged residents to patronise only their assigned Private Sector Participant, PSP, operators and to dispose of waste through approved channels, stressing that environmental cleanliness remains a shared responsibility.

The LAWMA boss assured that the Authority would continue to strengthen surveillance and enforcement operations across the state in collaboration with relevant agencies to curb illegal dumping and promote responsible environmental practices that protect public health.

He also encouraged members of the public to report cases of indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental violations through LAWMA’s official communication channels for prompt investigation and action.

Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustaining the enforcement of environmental laws, noting that consistent compliance by residents is essential to achieving a cleaner, safer and more liveable Lagos.
