BRISTOL, England — More than a decade after leaving a career in electronics to pursue healthcare, a 64-year-old father of five has graduated as a registered nurse, offering an example of lifelong learning and career reinvention, BBC reported. John Adesoye completed a nurse degree apprenticeship at the University of the West of England in Bristol and celebrated his graduation during ceremonies held this month, according to People.
Adesoye’s journey to nursing was far from conventional. Raised in Nigeria, he developed an early fascination with electronics before working as an electronics technician in Greece. After relocating to the United Kingdom, he shifted careers and began working as a healthcare assistant at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where he discovered a passion for caring for patients rather than repairing machines, The Punch reported.
He entered healthcare in 2013 and later advanced through apprenticeship programs, first qualifying as a nursing associate before completing a registered nurse degree apprenticeship. Throughout his studies, he balanced full-time employment with university coursework, spending part of each week attending classes and the remainder gaining hands-on clinical experience at Southmead Hospital.

One unique aspect of Adesoye’s university experience was sharing campus life with his son, Daniel, who was pursuing a degree in creative music technology at the same university. Adesoye said learning alongside younger students gave him confidence and reinforced his commitment to earning a degree he once believed was beyond his reach.
Since entering healthcare, Adesoye has worked in several hospital departments, including emergency medicine, cardiology, orthopedics and intensive care. After completing his apprenticeship, he accepted a position as a registered nurse at Southmead Hospital and has expressed interest in pursuing a master’s degree if the opportunity arises.
Faculty members overseeing the apprenticeship program praised Adesoye’s determination, saying his achievement demonstrates that balancing work, education and family responsibilities is challenging but attainable through perseverance. They noted that nurse apprentices often manage demanding careers while completing rigorous academic programs.
Adesoye hopes his story encourages other adults who may believe they are too old to return to school. He said age should not discourage people from pursuing higher education or changing careers, adding that lifelong curiosity and determination helped him achieve a goal he once thought impossible.
