football.london’s writers debate whether Arsenal are right to try and sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with a sensational move to Arsenal with the player informing Newcastle United he wants to leave the club this summer. football.london reported earlier this week that the Gunners were expected to step up their pursuit for the Magpies skipper following Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup.

Early discussions have already taken place, it is understood, and an offer of around £55million was rejected last month. Now, according to The Athletic, Guimaraes wants to leave Newcastle and Arsenal have indicated they are willing to fork out up to £60m to sign the former Lyon man.

Arsenal have tracked the midfielder since his time in France four years ago and Mikel Arteta is an admirer of the Brazilian. Newcastle have already let Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon leave this summer and their failure to qualify for the Champions League is likely to be a big factor in the major departures.

So, should Arsenal go all out and sign Guimaraes? football.london’s writers have their say below!

Since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, Bruno Guimaraes has impressed in the Premier League and become a huge fan favourite at St James’ Park. Overall he has contributed 31 goals and 32 assists in 195 appearances for the Magpies, developing into a world class midfielder during that period.

Arsenal want to sign a new midfielder this window, football.london understands, and Guimaraes could be the perfect arrival. He has just two years remaining on his deal so an exit now makes sense – all that needs to be agreed really is a fee between the two clubs.

Guimaraes would add some bite and passion to the Arsenal midfield, which could consist of Declan Rice, Guimaraes and Martin Odegaard next season. Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Mikel Merino are not bad options off the bench, either!

With Arsenal’s pre-season starting in mid-July and their first pre-season fixture taking place on August 1 against Girona, Andrea Berta should look to strike a deal as soon as possible for Guimaraes. It really could be an incredible signing.

This would be a statement signing from Arsenal. Defending Premier League champions often get their transfers wrong after lifting the title, but this is exactly what Arteta needs.

Before he can start thinking about dominating over the long haul, he needs to consolidate Arsenal’s place on their perch and few midfielders on the planet are better than Bruno Guimaraes. He can either form a rock solid partnership with Declan Rice or even play ahead of the England international, who is in dire need of a rest.

Guimaraes is an all round midfielder who would combine well, not only with Rice, but also with Martin Zubimendi and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Guimaraes is one of the few midfielders who can combine graceful passing and creativity with gritty aggression, which sums up Arteta’s Arsenal as a whole.

Arteta already boasts one of the best squads in the whole of Europe. Guimaraes would drag their midfield up to a, potentially, Champions League winning level.
