Veteran American singer Lionel Richie was rushed to hospital after falling ill during a live concert performance in Minnesota, forcing him to abruptly end the opening night of his North American tour.

According to the Saint Paul Fire Department, emergency responders transported an adult male from the arena to a local hospital after receiving a medical call from the venue on Wednesday night. While officials did not immediately confirm his identity, multiple reports linked the incident to the 77-year-old music icon.

Richie was performing at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul as part of a 26-city tour co-headlined with Earth, Wind & Fire when he reportedly began feeling dizzy on stage. Videos circulating online showed the singer sitting down multiple times while continuing to perform his hit song “Dancing on the Ceiling.”

Despite attempting to continue, Richie eventually took an intermission, leaving his band to continue performing for the audience. About 15 minutes later, members of his touring crew informed fans that the show would be cancelled due to his condition.

A saxophonist on stage told the audience that Richie was “not feeling well” and would not be able to continue, adding that further updates would be provided.

The singer had only recently kicked off the tour and had shared excitement about returning to the stage, posting behind-the-scenes rehearsal photos and expressing gratitude for his band and crew. He also recently celebrated his 77th birthday on June 20.

As of press time, Richie’s exact medical condition has not been publicly disclosed, and his representatives have not issued an official statement.

The incident has raised concern among fans as the music legend prepares for the remainder of his tour, with his next scheduled performance set for Chicago.
