Although the Super Eagles are absent from the ongoing 2026 World Cup in North America, Nigeria has not lacked representation at the competition. The country had two musicians — Burna Boy and Rema — perform at the opening ceremonies in both the US and Mexico, while Davido was also on stage during the tournament’s countdown shows. Only a few countries outside the hosting nations can boast such influence.

The Nigerian participation was not limited to off-the-pitch activities, with over 16 Nigerian-born footballers playing for several of the 48 countries at the competition. The figure is twice the number of players of Nigerian descent who participated in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It is one thing to simply participate and another to make a telling impact, and after just the first round of group matches, here are some players of Nigerian heritage who have etched their significance on the competition so far:

FOLARIN BALOGUN (TWO GOALS; MAN OF THE MATCH)

The former Arsenal youngster, born in the US to Nigerian parents, came to light by lighting the star-spangled banner with two goals in a 4-1 win over Paraguay.

He provided a crisp first-time finish to a deflected shot before powering a shot into the top corner for his brace. Balogun became the first USA player to score two or more goals in a World Cup match in 96 years.

MICHAEL OLISE (ONE ASSIST; MAN OF THE MATCH)

The forward, born to a Nigerian father and a Franco-Algerian mother, provided the impetus for France to unlock a stubborn Senegal team.

His change of position in the second half from wing to the centre led to his assist for Kylian Mbappe, and the first Nigerian to represent France created the highest number of chances in the encounter. He became France’s youngest World Cup debutant to win a man-of-the-match award.

FELIX NMECHA (ONE GOAL)

The 26-year-old scored a goal on his World Cup debut against minnows Curacao. Born to a Nigerian father and German mother, Nmecha latched onto Florian Wirtz’s pass to slam a shot into the far corner of the net in the fifth minute, and his strike stands as the earliest goal scored so far at the 2026 World Cup.

JAMAL MUSIALA (ONE GOAL)

The electric dribbling midfielder is a mercurial talent for Germany and has recovered from a career-threatening injury to participate in his second World Cup.

Born to a British-Nigerian father and a German mother, Musiala netted his first World Cup goal with a precise finish after a solo run, making it 4-1 against Caracao. He also became the youngest active German player to score in consecutive major tournaments of Euro 2024 and the current World Cup.

BUKAYO SAKA (ONE ASSIST)
The Arsenal winger came on as a second-half substitute and provided the assist for Marcus Rashford to net the clincher and final goal of England’s 4-2 win over Croatia. Born to Nigerian parents in England, the EPL winner slid a perfect pass to fellow Rashford to seal the win in the 85th minute on his 50th cap for the Three Lions.

PROMISE DAVID (ONE ASSIST)

Born to Nigerian immigrant parents in Canada, David provided the vital assist that ensured the Canucks took their first point in World Cup history on their seventh attempt.

As a second-half substitute, the former Nigeria U20 player and striker used his big frame to guide a pass to Cyl Larin for Canada’s goal and point.
