Aircraft Landed and Took Off on Delta Road, this is FG’s Reaction

Federal Government has launched a comprehensive investigation into a bizarre aviation incident where a private aircraft landed on an uncompleted roadway in Delta State and later took off without official clearance. Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo (SAN) confirmed the development via a social media post on X, detailing that the aircraft conducted a missed approach while attempting to land at the Asaba Airport on Wednesday morning. Instead of reaching the runway, the plane touched down on a concrete road currently under construction in the Ogwashi-Uku area, near the state capital.

Fortunately, all four crew members on board escaped without injuries and were transported to Asaba by road, according to eyewitness accounts. However, the situation escalated when the aircraft subsequently departed the location and returned to Lagos without obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals, only notifying Air Traffic Control after it was already airborne. Keyamo strongly condemned the unauthorized takeoff, labeling the incident a serious breach of both aviation regulations and national security.

In immediate response to the infraction, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) grounded the aircraft upon its arrival in Lagos pending the outcome of a full inquiry. The regulatory body has also suspended the operator’s permit for Non-Commercial flights (PNCF) and placed the flight under regulatory review. Moving forward, NCAA is collaborating with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency and the aircraft operator to piece together the exact circumstances of the event, while simultaneously auditing all operational, maintenance, and flight-related records. Furthermore, Keyamo disclosed that relevant security agencies have taken the flight crew into custody, and they are currently assisting authorities with the ongoing investigation.

While this incident underscores a staggering lapse in airspace monitoring, the swift and uncompromising response from the Ministry of Aviation and the NCAA serves as a critical, albeit reactive, defense of national security and regulatory integrity. The flight crew’s ability to pull off an unauthorized “off-grid” takeoff from a public road; bypassing Air Traffic Control until airborne, exposes severe structural vulnerabilities in regional surveillance that could easily be exploited for more malicious activities.
