Dear Peter,
Let me say this clearly, as many of you keep asking same question.
I do not live outside Nigeria because I hate Nigeria or because I am disconnected from its realities. I lived there for about 40 years. I passed through the same system, faced the same realities, and the same environment many people complain about every day.
Within that same Nigeria, I built myself, developed my capacity, and used the opportunities and resources available around me to grow. The more capacity you build, the more options you have. One of the options that opened up for me was to live outside Nigeria for now, develop more and return later. So when I speak, I do not speak from ignorance. I speak from experience.
Saying that anyone who supports a government in any way is supporting evil is an unserious and dangerous mindset. Government is not one flat block of evil or good. There are bad policies that must be challenged, and there are good decisions that must be acknowledged. Once a person loses the ability to separate the two, that person has entered fanaticism. And fanaticism has never helped any society. Fanaticism in Nigeria gave us terrorists like IPOB, Boko Haram, Bandits, etc.
Yes, I said Tinubu is running Nigeria better. I said so in context. The Nigeria we are suffering in today was not destroyed overnight. The economic pain, institutional weakness, unemployment, and disorder did not begin with this administration.
Many of those shouting the loudest today were part of the system that created the mess in the first place – Obi, Atiku, etc. So the honest question is not whether Nigeria is perfect now. The honest question is whether there is improvement compared to the people who drove us into this hole. My answer is yes.
You said he is running Nigeria like a personal business. Nigeria still has its constitutional structure: the executive, legislature, and judiciary. These institutions are functioning within their own spaces.
There is no clear evidence that he has dismantled the system and turned the country into a private enterprise. Politics is politics, and influence exists in every administration, but that is different from saying the country has become one man’s business.
And let us even be honest: if someone wants to argue that his business and administrative experience should help him govern more effectively, that is a fair argument. After all, his record in Lagos is one of the reasons many believed he could bring stronger structure and direction at the national level. if a man has proven administrative and business capacity, people are not wrong to expect that experience to reflect in governance. That is part of why many believed in his ability in the first place.
Now, on suffering. Yes, people are suffering. Nobody should deny that. But suffering did not start today. The real issue is whether the present direction contains policies and reforms that can gradually reduce that pain. I believe it does. Not every correction feels good at the beginning. Some reforms are painful before they become fruitful.
So no, agreeing with some actions of government is not supporting evil. No, refusing to join blind outrage does not make one the enemy. And no, emotional noise is not the same thing as political understanding.
Nigeria needs less hysteria, less abuse, and less fanaticism. What we need now is honesty, patience, critical thinking, and the maturity to admit that even in a flawed government, some things can still be right.
That is my position.
