Nasiru Gawuna, the former deputy governor of Kano state, has resigned his appointment as chairman of the board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

In a letter dated March 27 and addressed to the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Gawuna said his resignation is in compliance to the recent directive of President Bola Tinubu to political appointees.

He appreciated Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve the country.

“I am deeply grateful to His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria for the immense trust he placed in me by appointing me as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, and subsequently as Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria,” the letter reads.

“It has been an honor to serve and contribute to the development of our nation in these capacities.

“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive requiring all political appointees to step down in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act”

In a Facebook post, Abubakar Musa, the media aide to Gawuna, said his principal resigned to focus on his intention to contest the 2027 Kano governorship election.

In January 2025, Tinubu appointed Gawuna as the chairman of FMBN board.

Gawuna served as Kano deputy governor under the administration of Abdullahi Ganduje, former Kano governor.

He was sworn in as the deputy governor in September 2018 after Hafiz Abubakar resigned from the position.

He was Kano commissioner of agriculture before his nomination as deputy governor.

Gawuna was the Kano governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections.

He lost the election to Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, under the platform of the New Nigeria’s Peoples Party (NNPP).

Yusuf recently defected to the APC.

There are speculations that Gawuna is set to join the ADC to unite with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Kano governor.

Recently, President Bola Tinubu directed all political appointees under his administration seeking to contest elective offices in the 2027 elections to resign before March 31.
