Atlantis Pediatric Hospital has declined to comment on the suspension of its chief medical officer by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) panel — as it relates to the death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son.
In a statement on Monday, the hospital said it received a letter dated February 25 but delivered on March 5 from the panel, communicating the interim suspension of its chief medical director.
“Atlantis Pediatric Hospital acknowledges receipt of a letter communicating an interim suspension of our Chief Medical Director, with respect to which the hospital has noted certain reservations,” the statement reads.

The hospital added that it is reviewing the communication and seeking professional and regulatory support to address the issues raised.
It added that it would refrain from public commentary while the case is examined by the coroner’s court of Lagos state.
“Due to the pendency of this matter before the court and out of respect for judicial integrity and process, our hospital will exercise restraint in making any public commentary on matters that are currently before a court of law,” the statement reads.
“Our decision is consequent upon realising that the matter is already before the Coroner’s Court of Lagos State that is conducting an ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a patient.”
The hospital also extended condolences to the family involved.
“Our thoughts and sincere sympathies remain with the Adiche-Esege family following the sad loss of their child.”
The development follows the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of Nigerian writer Adichie, on January 7 following complications from a preparatory medical procedure.
Afterwards, Adichie served Euracare hospital with a legal notice alleging medical negligence and professional misconduct.
An investigation panel later found a prima facie case of negligence in the management of the child and suspended three doctors.
The panel also said evidence of professional misconduct was established against 10 other doctors at Atlantis Hospital.
