President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renewal of the appointment of Professor Ayo Omotayo as the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, for a final term of four years.

The renewal was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Omotayo was first appointed to the position in November 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, with the appointment subsequently confirmed by the Senate in February 2022.

With the renewal, the professor of Environmental Sustainability will continue to lead Nigeria’s foremost policy think-tank, which plays a key role in strategic policy formulation, leadership training and national development planning.

Professor Omotayo holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Ibadan, where he studied between 1980 and 1990. He began his academic career at Lagos State University (LASU) in 1985, rising rapidly through the ranks to become a Senior Lecturer by 1992 at the age of 30.
During his academic career at LASU, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2012 to 2017 and later became Director of the Centre for Planning, positions that strengthened his profile in policy research and strategic development before his appointment to head the prestigious institute in 2021.

The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, located in Kuru, Plateau State, is Nigeria’s apex institution for policy research and strategic leadership development, training senior government officials, military officers, and private-sector leaders through its flagship Senior Executive Course (SEC).

With the renewal of his tenure, Omotayo is expected to consolidate ongoing reforms and deepen the institute’s role in shaping strategic policy directions for Nigeria.
