The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of sections of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to allow the Federal Ministry of Works carry out urgent rehabilitation of damaged portions of the road.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, explaining that the repair works will cover the stretch between U-Turn Bus Stop and the Sango Tollgate, affecting both directions of traffic.

According to him, the rehabilitation exercise is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 11, and will run until Wednesday, March 11, spanning four weeks.

“To reduce the impact on traffic movement, the rehabilitation will be executed in two distinct phases,” Osiyemi said.

He explained that the first phase will focus on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway, covering the section from U-Turn Bus Stop inward Sango Tollgate. This phase is expected to last three weeks, from Wednesday, February 11 to Wednesday, March 4.

“During this period, traffic from Lagos/Abule-Egba toward Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one side of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres away from the construction zone, before rejoining the main road after the work area,” he stated.

Osiyemi added that rehabilitation would be carried out on one lane at a time, noting that once work on one half is completed, traffic would be redirected to the rehabilitated section while construction continues on the remaining half.

He assured motorists that vehicles travelling on the Lagos-bound lane would experience uninterrupted flow during the first phase.
For the second phase, Osiyemi said repairs would shift to the Lagos-bound carriageway, covering the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction. This phase is scheduled to run from Wednesday, March 4 to Wednesday, March 11.

He explained that traffic from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate toward Lagos/Abule-Egba would be diverted through one side of the road, about 20 metres from the active work area, with normal flow restored immediately after the construction zone.

“As with the first phase, work will be carried out in sections, and traffic will be redirected to completed portions as the project progresses. Motorists heading toward Abeokuta will continue to enjoy free movement,” he said.

The commissioner assured road users that comprehensive traffic management measures would be implemented throughout the duration of the project.

He urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance, comply with traffic signs, and cooperate with traffic officials deployed to the corridor.

“We appeal to the motoring public for patience and understanding while these critical repairs are carried out for the safety and benefit of all road users,” Osiyemi added.
