Nigerian music legend 2Baba has joined the growing online debate comparing Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and global Afrobeats star Wizkid, describing the discussion as “ridiculous” and unfair to both artists.

In a snippet from an unreleased episode of the Mic On podcast, the “African Queen” singer said such comparisons undermine Fela’s legacy while placing undue pressure on Wizkid.

“It is ridiculous. Apart from the fact that it is disrespectful to Fela, it is also unfair to Wizkid,” 2Baba stated.

The controversy began when Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, criticised Wizkid’s fanbase for making comparisons he deemed disrespectful, arguing that equating Wizkid with his father diminishes Fela’s historic impact on music and culture.

The debate intensified when Wizkid responded with a series of Instagram posts, challenging Seun and asserting his own musical greatness. The exchange quickly went viral, splitting fans and sparking heated discussions online.

Other members of the Kuti family have since weighed in. Yeni Kuti said she avoided joining the debate due to its confrontational nature, while Kunle Kuti called it an “unfounded debate” that left him heartbroken. Femi Kuti also weighed in, stressing that Fela’s legacy should not be dragged into controversy, though he acknowledged his personal connection with Wizkid.

Reports shows 2Baba’s intervention highlights the need for respect in discussions comparing icons of different generations and serves as a reminder of the lasting influence of Fela’s music.
