The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says 12 persons have been killed in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Yangoji–Abuja corridor.
Segun Ogungbemide, FRSC spokesperson, said in a statement that the accident occurred on Sunday at about 11:45 am in Gada Biyu area of FCT.
Ogungbemide noted that the crash involved four vehicles — a commercial trailer conveying coal, a commercial bus and two commercial cars.
He said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was caused by speed violation and dangerous driving on the part of the truck driver.
“Further investigation revealed that the truck driver was driving at an excessive speed beyond the prescribed limit for the corridor, lost control and rammed into already parked vehicles, leading to the fatal crash,” the statement reads.
The FRSC spokesperson said 18 persons were involved in the crash, with five of them dying instantly, while the other seven died at the hospital.
Ogungbemide added that three other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, including bruises, cuts, fractures and head injuries, and are currently receiving medical attention.
“Five victims died instantly at the scene, while seven others, who were rescued and taken to the hospital, later died from their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12,” he said.
