The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has dumped the party for the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), thus ending months of speculations on the dicey political move that has implications for his 2027 presidential bid.

The months of back and forth, underpinned by wide-ranging consultations ended on a positive note for the ADC.

Obi’s nationwide support that fetched him over six million votes in 2023 presidential poll on LP platform is expected to coalesce with Atiku Abubakar’s support that fetched him over six million votes on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Recall that in that election that produced Bola Tinubu as president on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Tinubu secured over eight million votes.

This explains why months of back and forth underpinned by wide-ranging consultations hallmarked Obi’s historic decision that will task his sense of patriotism and sacrifice when the party holds its presidential primary election to select its standard bearer.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, announced his defection to the ADC at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

The event was attended by former Senate President David Mark.

Obi said: “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey.

“We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027.”
