Suspected thugs beat and stripped half naked, renowned playwright, producer and director, Don Pedro Obaseki (cousin to former governor Godwin Obaseki) in Benin City, the Edo State capital for alleged disrespect to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
Pedro Obaseki was attacked at Uwa Primary School, on Sunday, December 28, 2025, where he went to play football.
THE CONCLAVE reports that a group of Ogbe boys led by one Capuepue Adun accosted him, challenged him over his disrespect fir the Oba of Benin, and consequently stripped him half-clad after rough handling him.
The specifics of the alleged offence centred on the fact that he attended one “Meet and Greet” in London where he reportedly cast aspersion on the Palace, and urged Edo people to desist from greeting the Oba of Benin “Oba ghatokpere”. He urged instead that Edo people should be saying “Edo Atokpere.”
The video clip that captured Don Pedro Obaseki’s “arrest, assault, and movement” to the Palace, where he was made to walk some distance from the gate of Palace into the expansive palace on his knees.
He was made to keep chanting and shouting: “Oba ghatokpere” with his hands lifted up.
Some Palace Chiefs met the thugs and Obaseki midway, where he got a reprieve in their hands, was rescued and taken inside the Palacd building to meet with the Oba of Benin.
The Palace Chiefs addressed the suspected thugs in Bini language.
They said the Oba was going to the Holy Arousa church for Thanksgiving service to mark end of the Igue festival.
According to them, “Today is Thanksgiving day at the Holy Arousa. We don’t want any trouble. If there is anybody that counted himself as enemy of the Oba, allow him and see how he will end up.”
The Chiefs later took him in despite protest by the thugs.
As of the time of filing this report, it was believed he had been taken in, so he could apologise to the revered royal father.
