The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested David Effiong, a masquerade spotted on the streets, just days after the governor banned masquerade displays across the state.
David Effiong is now set to face prosecution for violating the state’s new regulations.
Police Crackdown Following Governor’s Order
Governor Umo Eno had recently issued a strict ban on masquerades, warning that anyone caught performing or roaming the streets in full masquerade regalia would be arrested and prosecuted.
The governor cited incidents of masquerades using fear and intimidation to extort money and terrorize residents as the main reason for the ban.
Acting on this order, the Akwa Ibom State Police swiftly apprehended Effiong after he was seen disrupting public peace while dressed in traditional masquerade attire.
Police sources confirmed that the suspect will be charged to court accordingly.
