A fatal road accident has claimed the lives of eight people in Akungba Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, after a cement-laden truck lost control on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred near the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University, close to Holy Trinity Church, when the truck reportedly suffered brake failure while descending a hill and crashed into a barricade.
According to eyewitnesses, the impact of the crash caused chaos within the university community as residents and students rushed to the scene.
One witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The trailer was coming from the top of the hill. We couldn’t tell if the barricade was opened or not, but some people said it was destroyed by the truck.
About five people were initially confirmed dead, but more bodies were later discovered under the vehicle.”
Emergency responders and security operatives arrived promptly to recover the bodies and clear the wreckage.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the casualty figure, saying eight people — five men, two women, and a boy — died in the crash, while no injuries were recorded.
The agency attributed the accident to brake failure and loss of control, adding that only one vehicle was involved.
