The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over the rising trend of premature political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that it poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s electoral integrity and democratic stability.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, raised the alarm on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ roundtable in Abuja on “The Challenges of Premature Political Campaigns.”

He noted that despite repeated warnings, politicians and their supporters have continued to engage in outdoor advertising, media blitzes, and rallies in open defiance of the Electoral Act.

Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 stipulates that campaigns should not begin earlier than 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours prior.

Section 94(2) provides penalties of up to N500,000 on conviction for campaigns within 24 hours of voting.

However, Yakubu lamented that the law is silent on violations occurring before the official campaign window.

Yakubu stated: “Across the country, we have seen outdoor advertising, media campaigns and rallies promoting political parties and individuals.

“These actions undermine our ability to effectively track campaign finance limits, as huge sums are being expended outside the regulated timeframe.”

He added that while Nigerians expect INEC, as the regulator of political parties, to sanction violators, the Commission is constrained by the absence of clear legal provisions.

He explained “Unfortunately, there is no sanction whatsoever for campaigns held before the 150-day window.

“This gap in the law makes it difficult for the Commission and other regulatory bodies to curb the menace of early campaigns.”

Yakubu stressed that the issue is not new but requires urgent reflection and reforms, warning that unchecked premature campaigns could destabilise the electoral process and compromise fairness ahead of 2027.
