Abdulmalik Adetola Lawal, a graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), has been named the Outstanding Graduate Student Researcher of the Year for 2025. The award recognizes his exceptional contributions to health communication and media innovation.

Currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Reynolds School of Journalism, Lawal’s research explores how media influences health behaviors in underserved communities. Drawing from personal experience during Nigeria’s Ebola outbreak, he focuses on designing effective, evidence-based health messages—particularly around mental health and antimicrobial resistance.
Lawal emphasizes the transformative power of communication, saying, “Media isn’t just for spreading information—it’s a tool to build a healthier, more informed society.”
