Nigeria’s largest domestic airline, Air Peace, is facing heightened regulatory scrutiny following a wave of passenger complaints about prolonged delays and unprocessed refunds for cancelled flights.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has officially summoned the airline’s management to appear before it at its Abuja headquarters on June 23, 2025.

In a notice issued Monday, the FCCPC cited potential breaches of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which mandates timely and transparent refunds for cancelled bookings. The Commission is demanding Air Peace present comprehensive records—including 12 months of flight cancellation data, refund logs, and documentation of any remedial actions taken to address customer grievances.

“Failure to issue timely refunds after a cancelled flight may constitute a violation of consumer rights under Nigerian law and could attract penalties,” the FCCPC said.

This latest development follows a separate investigation earlier this year into alleged exploitative fare increases by Air Peace—a probe the airline sought to block through legal means. While the current summons is not directly connected to that case, it has reignited public concerns about airline accountability and consumer protection in Nigeria’s growing aviation sector.

Industry observers say the FCCPC’s action could mark a turning point in enforcement of passenger rights, especially as air travel continues to rise across the country.
