At least ten students of Good Shepherd Catholic Catering School in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, have been hospitalized following a gas explosion in the school’s kitchen.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of Friday while students were engaged in cooking activities.

Comrade Emmanuel Nwizi, the father of one of the affected students, revealed that the explosion was allegedly triggered by an Android phone brought into the kitchen by a student.

Nwizi, who works for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abakaliki, reported that five of the injured students are currently on life support in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

His daughter, Miss Chisom Nwizi, sustained severe burns and had recently started attending the school last month.

The State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident but did not provide further details.

Sources connected to the school indicated that the Catholic Reverend Sisters overseeing the institution are actively working to provide the best care for the injured students.
