Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have uncovered and dismantled a suspected cybercrime training centre in Abuja, arresting dozens of individuals during a coordinated operation.

The raid, carried out on Thursday, targeted a facility located in Becki Estate, Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory, where officials apprehended 31 suspects believed to be involved in internet fraud activities. Those arrested reportedly include alleged masterminds of the operation as well as trainees undergoing instruction.

GWG.ng reports that the training facility is itself located near the official EFCC training school also in the Karu area of the FCT.

According to preliminary findings, the facility functioned as a training hub where recruits were allegedly coached on how to carry out online scams. Items recovered during the operation include multiple mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other digital equipment suspected to have been used in the illicit activities.

Investigators revealed that several of the trainees were reportedly brought in from Benue State under the guise of legitimate employment opportunities. Upon arrival, however, they were allegedly introduced to fraudulent schemes and provided with tools and software designed for cybercrime operations.

Further details suggest that the recruits were kept within the premises under strict supervision, with limited freedom of movement. Authorities also allege that their personal phones were confiscated, effectively isolating them from outside contact.

Sources familiar with the investigation indicated that disciplinary measures within the facility were reportedly severe, with claims of physical punishment used to enforce compliance among the trainees.

The anti-graft agency confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured that those implicated will be prosecuted in accordance with the law upon conclusion of the inquiry.
