  • Moro said former President Goodluck Jonathan was also being wooed to return and possibly contest under the PDP
  • Obi had declared interest in the presidency, but his next party platform remained uncertain as he joined an opposition coalition

As the race for the 2027 general elections gathers steam, the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Abba Moro, has given fresh insight into speculations surrounding the possible return of Peter Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Talks ongoing with Peter Obi, Moro says

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 26, Senator Moro disclosed that conversations are underway with Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 to contest the presidency under the Labour Party.

“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, saying, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate’,” Moro revealed.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra state, was the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before resigning from the party ahead of the 2023 polls.

He later ran under the Labour Party, where his candidacy resonated strongly with young Nigerians, though he finished third behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.

Senator speaks on possibility of Jonathan’s return

When asked whether former President Jonathan could also return to the PDP to contest in 2027, Senator Moro responded that efforts were ongoing to woo the ex-leader.

“Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility,” he said.

Jonathan rose to become Nigeria’s president in 2010 after the death of President Musa Yar’Adua. He also went on to win the 2011 election but lost his re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Since the former president left office, Jonathan has stayed away from partisan politics. He rarely attends PDP functions.

In all, there has been calls for him to make a political comeback.

While the ex-president has not publicly declared his interest or confirmed the news making the rounds, his defection from the PDP, speculation over his political future continues.

Obi’s next platform remains uncertain

It has been two years after the 2023 election, however, Obi has joined forces with top opposition figures.

This includes Atiku Abubakar, in the emerging coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi has recently declared his intention to vie for the presidency in 2027, though it remains unclear under which party he will eventually contest.
