Fresh from a successful outing with approval by the National University Commission(NUC) and the subsequent issuance of licence to operate a private tertiary institution, the Thomas Adewumi University located in Oko, Kwara State, is set to commence the current 2020/2021 Academic Session in earnest.

To this end, the University sited on a sprawling, serene ambience, is gearing all efforts to admit its first set of students with effect from May 2nd, 2021, when the session formally starts.

This was disclosed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs Modupe Popoola, moments after the licence was officially issued today at a ceremony in Abuja.

The Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) has as Promoter and Proprietor, Dr J.B.O. Adewumi, an engineer of repute, renowned inventor and a former lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

The University is named in honour of his father, Thomas Adewumi. The proprietor’s PhD research focus was in the area of how to generate light from water and hydro sources.

The institution is among the 20 latest universities which the Federal Government approved in February early this year.

The University which has collaboration with the University of Ilorin as its mentoring institution, is an offshoot of the reputed Thomas Adewumi International School, Oko, the success story which inspired the Founder to birth the University.

TAU has a Management team ably led by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof K.L. Ayorinde and comprising other Principal Officers including the Registrar, Mrs Dupe Popoola, a seasoned Administrator and erstwhile Deputy Registrar both at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and also the University of Ilorin at different times.

According to the Registrar, “we are hitting the ground running based on the directive received from the Joint Admissions Matriculations Board(JAMB) to the effect that all private universities must close admissions by 15th june, this year.”

Popoola added: “We have no time to waste. We intend to commence the 2020/ 2021 session on 2nd May 2021 and end the session on 20th February, 2022.”

She also disclosed that the University is to develop its niche in three core areas; Sciences, Medicine and Management.

She further disclosed that at its current first phase, the institution is flagging off with a three faculty and 15 Departmental structure; the Faculty of Computing and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.

She stressed that candidates who scored 160 and above in UTME are eligible to apply.
