The Presidency has responded to the growing calls for the restructuring of the country, saying the agitations are “unwarranted and unhelpful”.
Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the RCCG, Pastor Wole Oladiyun of CLAM, and Daystar’s Reverend Sam Adeyemi have in the last 48 hours reiterated the urgent need for the Buhari administration to be sensitive to the strident calls for a review of the political architecture of the country.
Pastor Adeboye called for an urgent, orderly, and peaceful reconfiguration of the Nigerian nation in order to avert an imminent break up, which he warned, might inevitably be violent, if care is not taken. He insisted that God has reserved a heavenly assignment on the lap of President Buhari to listen to agitators of restructuring and to heed the voice of wisdom in order to save the nation from collapse.
Adeboye spoke at the 60th Independence Day Celebration Symposium organised by RCCG and the Nehemiah Leadership Institute. “Let me explain. We all know that we must restructure. It’s either we restructure or we break, you don’t have to be a prophet to know that one. That is certain – restructure or we break up,” the man of God had declared.
Also, Pastor Wole Oladiyun, Senior Pastor, Christ Livingspring Apostolic Ministry ( CLAM), called for a deliberate and sincere restructuring that will lead to a new constitution, a return to the Regional Government structure, and a reduction in the cost of governance. According to him, “we need to review our system of governance because the current arrangement does not reflect true federalism.”
“The present system does not portray true Federalism. Our constitution must be reviewed. Let there be six regions from the present six geo-political zones, and let there be a President with six Vice Presidents from the six regions”, Pastor Oladiyun stated.
He also recommended that:
• Nigeria should adopt a Zero Party System.
• Candidates should be elected based on their executive Intelligence and Pedigree.
• Federal Character to be totally eradicated
• Youths to be involved in Governance at all levels.
• Local Government reform should be immediately embarked upon.
• Elders above 70years should play supervisory roles.
• Reduction in the number of Parastatals.
But President Buhari, in a statement issued on his behalf by Mr Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant, described the agitation by Pastor Adeboye and others as “unhelpful and unwarranted”.
The Presidency warned that the current government will not succumb to threats neither will the Administration bow to unnecessary pressure.. “This government will not succumb to threats and take any decision out of pressure at a time when the nation’s full attention is needed to deal with the security challenges facing it at a time of the COVID-19 health crisis,” he added.
Shehu said President Buhari has the mandate and “the interests of 200 million Nigerians” to protect and will not take a decision “out of fear or threats especially in this hour of health crisis”.
“The President, as an elected leader under this constitution, will continue to work with patriotic Nigerians, through and in line with, the parliamentary processes to finding solutions to structural and other impediments to the growth and well-being of the nation and its people,” the statement concluded.
