Let me start this piece by stating that I belong to neither PDP nor APC. This position gives me the liberty to express my opinion freely.
While committed party loyalists and their social media influencers must only condemn rival politicians and rationalize the evil done by their party leaders, nonaligned citizens like me can commend public officials in any of the parties when they do well and condemn the bad ones across political parties.
For instance, I love what Governors Ben Ayade and Seyi Makinde of PDP are doing in Cross River State and Oyo State respectively. I also commend what Governor Zulum of APC is doing in Borno State.
Back to the subject matter of this piece.
The victory that Governor Obaseki got in yesterday’s election was made possible by God four years ago. Oshiomhole’s exaltations of Obaseki and his negative words against Ize-Iyamu in 2016 would not fade away easily. That Oshiomhole called his new political son a thief 4 years ago and the hapless candidate did not seek redress in court actually meant that the allegations were true.
Godfatherism is synonymous with politics of patronage. Oshiomhole turned against Obaseki because the latter refused to open the treasury of Edo State for him. This is the perception of the voters in Edo State and that earned Obaseki their sympathy and trust. Oshiomhole overrated his political influence. His highhandedness as the National Chairman of APC cost the party huge fortunes.
His desperate attempt to seek refuge in Edo State, so that he can still enjoy some power, has also backfired. God has used the people of Edo State to cut him to size. Other godfathers who are not allowing Nigeria to move forward will join him in the political desert soon.
Now that Edo State has voted Obaseki to run their affairs for the next four years, I pray that the Supreme Court will not upturn the will of the electorate on the ground of some ambiguous technicalities. Our democracy must be protected.
Finally, I advise Governor Obaseki not to follow the path of some governors who performed well in their first term but became monsters in their second term.
He must sustain the political capital that helped him defeat the seemingly invincible Oshiomhole. He must provide good governance and peace for the good people of Edo State.
I, Adebiyi Adesuyi, send my best wishes to Edo State and her people. Long live, Nigeria.
