Lagos State is creating pathways for youth entrepreneurship that can generate income and jobs.
With worsening employment prospect owing to the pandemic, the Commissioner Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, said the government was determined to unlock business opportunities for young adults that would lower unemployment and bring social benefits.
Addressing a webinar organised by the ministry themed: Missing Link in Post COVID Era, the Commissioner said the government intends by its programmes to raise entrepreneurs that can provide services and products as well as create employment.
According to her, the government was achieving this through enabling policies and programmes, adding entrepreneurship represents a great way for youths to earn a living.
The Programme Director, Field of Skills and Dreams, (FSD), Omowale Ogunrinde, stressed the need to harness the talents of youths as the job market was incapable of offering sufficient opportunities for the young people.
She said FSD aims to increasing youth employability skills and capabilities.
According to her, unemployment is one of the biggest issue facing the youth today, as such concerted efforts must be channeled towards empowering youths with skills to enable them start their own enterprises, making them job creators rather than seekers.
The founder and Chief Executive, W-Holistic Business Solutions (W-HBS), Olanrewaju Oniyitan, noted that youths were factories of ideas that needed to be guided to transform into enterprises that culminate into opportunities and jobs.
With a predominantly young population, she maintained that focusing on entrepreneurship has been a critical element for economic growth, social inclusion, youth engagement and job creation.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas said the ministry is promoting a positive trend for entrepreneurship in the state and more individuals were being supported to start their own businesses.
