An undisclosed number of inmates of the nation’s oldest and biggest prison, the Ikoyi Prison, have been reportedly electrocuted following a power surge on Monday.
One account said five awaiting trial inmates were affected.
Although details of how the incident happened and the cause were still sketchy yesterday, there were reports that some electric cables at the prison went up in flames.
The casualty figures are yet to be ascertained.
Mr Francis Enobore, Spokesperson for Ikoyi Prisons, confirmed the accident when The Podium spoke with him. He, however promised to issue a formal statement in due course.
