The Chief Commander is 78 Not Out! A true legend for the ages.
I’ve read so much eulogies poured on Ebenezer Obey today. There’s really not much I can add. I suspect, though, that there’s no musician, living or dead, that I hold in greater awe. His music (and that of KSA) dominated my childhood, thanks to my Dad’s love of the duo.
Even better, many of the underlying messages of his music have been lights through a treacherous life path.
One of the reasons why his music remains constantly relevant is how they touch many aspect of life’s journey. When birthdays come, it’s Obey’s “Celebration” album. When there’s a baby naming ceremony, it’s his “Precious Gift”. When weddings come along, it’s his “What God has joined together”.
For many other milestones, his “Ambition” album came to the rescue. As a kid, his “It is a goal” track in honour of Olusegun Patrick Odegbami somehow married my love of football with his music. And who can forget his “A Christmas Special”, an album that remains the go-to music for every Christmas, almost 50 years after he released it. It is hard to think up a greater Philosopher-Musician!
The great man is still going strong. Unbowed by age. Even better, he’s enjoying the fruits of a long career that delivered classics after classics. 78 is a great age. May he be blessed with a few decades more.
Happy birthday, Baba Commander!!
