The City of Columbus will celebrate Africa Day for the first time at the City Hall (Broad St. Side) 90 W. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 7:00pm.

“This ceremony will honor and commemorate Africa Day and the contributions the African community has made to Columbus, said Council President Shannon Hardin and Councilmember Nick Bankston.

“The celebration of Africa Day represents an opportunity to acknowledge a diverse and important group of people from 54 African countries, who enrich and make valuable contributions to Central Ohio; and answers the African Union’s call for greater unity among African countries.”

The celebration will include a keynote address from Rep. Munira Abdullahi (OH-09), the first Muslim and first Somali in the Ohio Legislature.

There will also be performances by Ohio Tegaru Youth and OSU’s Eritrean & Ethiopian Organization.

Africa Day, also known as African Unity Day, is celebrated annually on May 25. It commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU), on May 25,1963.
