Like play, like play the Western Nigeria Security Network otherwise known as Amotekun Oyo State has taken off, assuredly, promising and on sound footings with its on-going recruitment exercise at Lekan Salami Stadium Adamasingba.
Like all good communal things, there were conflicts of interests, passions, perspectives and principles but through the various guidance of His Excellency Governor Oluseyi Makinde, the Chairman of the Amotekun Board Rtd. Brigadier General Ajibola Toogun and the Commandant of the outfit Rtd. Col. Olayinka Olayanju rifts, tensions and misunderstanding were simmered and a common front forged with all interested parties to see to the success of the outfit in western Nigeria, and Oyo state specifically.
Tellingly, after the tentativeness of bureaucracy, the exactness of the new public administration in the state, the synergies of the variegated interest groups and public expectations arose the deliberativeness of focus, purpose and determination to succeed and tread where angels feared.
Over 47,000 applications were received from interested indigenes of Oyo state between the ages of 20 and 60.
The vacancies were made public via appreciable publicity.
Accessibility for applications was initiated on Oyo state internet job portal for all able bodied indigenes either males or females, lettered or unlettered.
Emphasis was laid on individual applications than on group applications.
This is an insight into the mindset and efforts of His Excellency governor Oluseyi Makinde towards job creation, security of lives and properties for prosperity as entrenched in his cardinal objectives.
A value chain that was hitherto meager in this clime.
Correspondingly, the Amotekun board in its wisdom decided to give all applicants a chance, so no short listing was done, so that nobody would be left out and all interests satisfied.
Given lean resources, fledging personnel and modest capacity the task is onerous but surmountable with ingenuity and sheer force of will on the part of the board and command management of Amotekun.
One way or the other and with plenty noise the pigs must get to Oyo.This is a task that has to be done with openness, integrity and character to pave way for solid foundation, integrity, character and sustainable reputation building.
The principles of sound project management became expedient.
There was no formal standard operating procedure (SOP).
The Amotekun SOP has to be written on the go with marginal error possibilities.
Leadership skills, scientific procedures, decades of experience, native intelligence, new civil service thought patterns and vivid imagination have to be employed to give the task a meaningful and result oriented methodology.
Consequently, local governments in Oyo state had to be divided into two zones, more than two months was projected for the exercise.
This is simply to give every applicant a fair and unmitigated shot at been employed.
With an estimated 1,000 applicants to be screened, interview and assess a day it is a mighty project.
So help and collaboration had to be sought from statutory members of the Amotekun security board to supply experienced officers in the art of recruitment and selection.
The members include the Oyo state Police command, the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs, the Directorate of Secret Service, the National Civil Defense Service and the Nigeria Correctional Service.
In the same vein capable venues to accommodate such a humongous crowd of expectants and other security considerations have to be carefully selected.
The Lekan Salami stadium at Adamasingba was selected to take care of applicants from Ibadan Main City LGs, Ibadan Less City LGs and Ibarapa LGs.
Applicants from LGs in Oyo axis will do theirs at the popular Durbar stadium, Ogbomoso Township stadium will host applicants from LGs that falls under Ogbomoso, while OYSADEP in Saki will host the LGs in Oke Ogun 1 and One Ogun 2 LGs will be hosted at Iseyin Township stadium.
Publicity were done to inform the public and alert the applicants to the time and venue of the exercise for various local governments, as well as to cascade any new developments.
Observers including the media were invited to come and witness the proceedings accordingly.
Like all human endeavors, there would be the good, the bad and the ugly.
Enthusiasm and lofty expectations were not in short supply from majority of the applicants.
Document forgers were apprehended and scammers were arrested and made to face the law.
From an observatory, the recruitment was stringent and tough but fair.
3,000 lucky, capable and fit candidates are expected to scale the hurdles and be trained to be our first set of Amotekun in Oyo state.
One observer remarked that if the recruitment is this rigorous, how would the training be?
We say that time will tell.
Like the Chairman Rtd. Brigadier General ‘Kunle Toogun would always say ‘You cannot build a structure on a shaky foundation’
The journey has started in earnest full of optimism, goals and ambitions.
