A total of 18 professors are competing for the position of the Vice-Chancellorship of the University of Ibadan as the tenure of the current VC, Prof Idowu Olayinka, expires on November 30.
A new VC is expected to assume office on December 1, 2020. The 18 qualified professors of international repute are profiled below.
Professor Babatunde Lawal Salako
Professor Babatunde Lawal Salako is a seasoned physician, teacher, researcher and administrator. He is currently the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba Lagos. His primary employment remains as Professor of Nephrology at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and an Honorary Consultant Physician and Nephrologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Professor Salako formulated the drug Miniplus an antihypertensive drug to replace Minizide in the market in collaboration with Neimeth Pharmaceuticals International when Minizide became scarce.
Professor Oladele Olatunde Layiwola
Professor Oladele Olatunde Layiwola is a two-time Director of African Studies at the University of Ibadan, in Nigeria, and a former Director of the University Media Centre.
He obtained an honours degree in English from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Nigeria in1981, and won a Commonwealth Scholarship to study for a Ph.D in Theatre Studies at the School of English, University of Leeds, UK from 1983 -1986. On his return to Nigeria he joined the University of Ibadan where, on account of his versatility, he has taught across five departments – African Studies, English, Communication & Language Arts, Theatre Arts and Centre for Sustainable Development. He became a full Professor at Ibadan in 1998.

Professor Clement Olusegun Olaniran KOLAWOLE
Olusegun Olaniran Kolawole is a Professor of Language Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan. He served as the Dean, Faculty of education, Ondo State University between 2011 and 2013, Head, Department of Teacher Education between (2016 and 2017) and Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education, the University of Ibadan from (2017 to 2020). He is a member of several academic/professional associations and has participated in several research activities and served as a consultant to some agencies.
Emiola Oluwabunmi OLAPADE-OLAOPA
Professor Emiola Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa is a 1986 graduate of the University of Ibadan whose career spans surgery, urology, molecular biology, medical education, and health systems research and development.
He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, the University of Ibadan in 2001, and was elevated to the rank of full Professor in 2007. He has participated actively at all levels of academic and administrative governance having served on numerous Departmental, Faculty, College of Medicine, and University committees. Prominent amongst these are: Sub-Dean (Post-graduate) of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences 2004-2006); and Congregational Member of Senate of the Academic Board of the College of Medicine and the Senate at various times; and Member, University of Ibadan, Strategic Planning Committee (2006-2010).
Profile of Professor Olatunde Rom KALILU
Razzaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu, Professor of Art and Art History, studied at the prestigious University of Ife and the University of Ibadan. His career development is extensive, having worked in the advertising sector and the primary, secondary, polytechnic and college of education schools system before joining LAUTECH where he became a professor in 1999.
He is a prodigious scholar with pioneering groundbreaking achievements. Two of his books, the first on-campus cultism inspired the National Association of Nigerian Students anti-cultism activities of the late 1990s.

Tal-hatu Kolapo HAMZAT is the first African Professor of Neurophysiotherapy, a gentleman with demonstrable integrity, outstanding emotional intelligence, ample soft skills, good human relation, and a role model. He is a proud alumnus of University of Ibadan where I obtained B.Sc.(Hons) Physiotherapy 1994; M.Ed. (Physiology of Exercise) with distinction 1998 and PhD (Neurological-Physiotherapy) 2001. I hold the record-setting honour of being the first to obtain a PhD degree in Physiotherapy from any West African University.
PROFILE OF PROFESSOR HAKEEM BABATUNDE FAWEHINMI
Prof Hakeem Fawehinmi is a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology with a wealth of experience in Institutional Administration and well-rooted in the finest academic traditions.
On completion of his medical training in 1992 from UniPort, he undertook his internship training at UPTH before proceeding for his NYSC at the Nigerian Air Force Clinic, Ilorin in 1994. He gained employment into UniPort in June 1995 as a Lecturer II and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in May 2010. During these years of his stewardship, he held key academic and administrative positions and served in several Statutory and Ad–hoc Committees and Boards, attributes which have equipped him with the requisite skills to provide leadership to a well-informed, articulate and growing academic community.
Ebenezer Olatunde FAROMBI,
PhD, FRSC, FAS, FAAS, FATS, FNSBMB
Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Toxicology
Ebenezer Olatunde Farombi was born in Osogbo, Osun State and studied Biochemistry at the University of Ibadan where he graduated as the only candidate with Second Class Upper Division and best student in his class. He obtained his MSc degree in Biochemistry as the best student and the only candidate with PhD grade in his set. He began his career in the University of Ibadan as an Assistant Lecturer in March 1990 and rose through the ranks to become Professor of Biochemistry on 01 October, 2006.
After completing his PhD in 1995, he proceeded to the University of Liverpool, England for Postdoctoral training. He had another Postdoctoral training in Denmark between 2001 and 2002 at the Institute of Food Safety and Toxicology, Copenhagen, Denmark. He has been a Visiting Professor to 10 World-Class institutions across the globe.
Profile of Professor Temitope Oluwagbenga Alonge
Professor Temitope Oluwagbenga ALONGE; MBBS (Ibadan), MD (Leicester), FRCS Edinburgh, FWACS (Ortho &Trauma), FPA, FIPMA-UK, CSFIEC-UK, the First Professor of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in the history of the Premier University, the University of Ibadan.
Born to the Igbaro-Alonge family of Okia Oka in Akoko South West Local Government area of Ondo State he completed his primary education in Ajegunle, Lagos in 1970 and his secondary education at Owo High School, Owo under the tutelage of the late sage, Pa Adekunle Ajasin in 1975. He graduated Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in June 1983 and obtained the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom in 2000.
Professional Fellowships by examination includes; Fellow, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, FRCSEd in April 1991 and Fellow, West African College of Surgeons, Orthopaedics & Trauma FWACS (Ortho) in April 1994.
PROFILE OF PROFESSOR ADEYINKA ABIDEEN ADERINTO
Professor Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Ibadan. He was trained at the University of Ibadan where he obtained the Bachelor, Master and doctoral degrees in Sociology. Professor Aderinto started his teaching career in 1992 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan; and promoted to the grade of Professor in 2009.
His main areas of teaching and research are Social problems, Deviance and Criminology, where he has published widely. He currently has 105 publications. Professor Aderinto has successfully supervised 12 doctoral theses, one M.Phil. Dissertation, more than 80 Master’s projects, and more than one hundred Bachelor’s long essays.
Profile of Professor Olusegun George ADEMOWO
Olusegun George Ademowo was appointed a Junior Research Fellow in 1989 at the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT) and joint appointment with the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.
He has PhD in Pharmacology from the same University. He was promoted Professor of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in 2005. He is renown in the field of malaria research where he continues to make significant contributions. He is Head of the Drug Research unit in IAMRAT where he leads multidisciplinary research teams. His research focus is on epidemiology and pathogenesis of malaria, malaria chemotherapy.
A PROFILE OF PROFESSOR BABATUNDE LATEEF ADELEKE
Professor Adeleke was admitted into University of Ilorin, in 1977, and he completed his undergraduate studies in 1981 with a B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Statistics with Second Class Upper Division. Prof. Adeleke obtained a Master of Science degree in Mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in Statistics. Prof. Adeleke had a stint of training, resulting into a Diploma in Agricultural Statistics between 1984 and 1985 at the International Statistical Programme Centre, Washington, DC, USA.
Prof. Adeleke was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Ilorin in 1986, and rose to the position of Professor in 2007. Between 2015 and 2018, Prof. Adeleke was the Head of Department of Statistics; between 1st August 2012 and 31st July, 2014, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Science/ Physical Sciences; and earlier on, between 2nd January 2010 and August, 2012, he was the Director, General Studies Division.
Kayode Oyedode ADEBOWALE
Professor Kayode Oyedode ADEBOWALE was born in Ibadan on January 11, 1962. He completed his BSc programme in 1984, MSc programme in 1986 and Ph.D. programme in 1991, all at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He became a Professor of Industrial Chemistry in 2006.
He had postdoctoral experience at the Ebehard’s Karls University, Tuebingen, and the University of Dresden both in Germany and also at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Ital
He has won several accolades which include Fellow, Nigeria Academy of Science, Polymer Institute of Nigeria, Chemical Society of Nigeria and Science Association of Nigeria. Outside the shores of Nigeria, Fellow Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, Germany, and lately, African Academy of Science.
Professor Adebowale has a track record of distinguished research and service and he is currently conducting research in Industrial Chemistry. These include, Thermo-catalytic conversion of wastes and biomass into useful industrial feed stocks; Physicochemical, functional properties and retrogradation behaviour of native and modified starches and protein concentrates of underutilised legumes and cereals; Synthesis, kinetics of production and characterisation of oil-modified alkyd resin; Fuzzy Logic Modelling of Environmental Compartments and Kinetics and thermodynamic studies of the adsorption of metals on kaolinite clay.
He has Cognate administrative experience as Dean Faculty of Science in 2009, Director Special Duties, Office of the Vice-Chancellor in 2015 and two-term Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) from 2018.
Professor Aderemi Raji-Oyelade
Aderemi Raji-Oyelade is an award-winning poet and professor of Africana literature, creative writing and cultural studies. He is a member of the Nigerian Academy of Letters and Distinguished Fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors.
He joined the Department of English officially as a Lecturer II in 1995 and became Professor in 2007.
Raji-Oyelade has served in different administrative capacities either as member, chair or facilitator of academic and literary programmes within the University of Ibadan and other institutions in Nigeria and abroad. He served as the Sub-Dean General, Faculty of Arts (1997-1999); Sub-Dean, Postgraduate (2003-2004); member, University Postgraduate Sub-Committee on Guidelines for Writing Doctoral Theses (2003), and later Chairman, Working Committee on the Production of the University Manual of Style for UI Scholars (2003-2004); Acting Head, Department of English (2009-2011); substantive Head of Department (2011-2012); Chairman, Faculty of Arts ICT Committee (2010-2012); Dean of Arts (2012-2015); the University of Ibadan Public Orator (2011-2015); Resource Person for both the University of Ibadan Research Foundation (2011 till date) and the MacArthur Foundation (2016); and member of the University Governing Council (2019 till date).
As Dean of Arts, Prof. Raji-Oyelade introduced a series of innovative programmes and supervised a number of municipal projects through self-help geared towards achieving a conducive learning and teaching environment that inspires other developments within the university.
PROFILE OF PROFESSOR ANTHONY KAYODE ONIFADE
Professor Anthony Kayode ONIFADE hails from Ekan-Meje, Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. He had his secondary education at Bishop Smith Memorial College (BSMC) Ilorin between 1978 and 1983. He was the first Health Prefect in his final year at BSMC, Ilorin. Later on in 1983, he proceeded to the Ondo State University (now Ekiti State University) Ado-Ekiti, where he graduated in 1987 as the best overall student in the B.Sc class of Botany Department. In 1992, he obtained his Master’s degree in Agricultural Biology (Phytopathology) from the University of Ibadan. At the University of Ilorin in 1998, he bagged his Ph.D degree in Microbiology. Professor Onifade started his teaching career as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Botany in 1989 at Ekiti State University Ado-Ekiti, where he rose to the rank of Lecturer 1 in 1997.
He then began his FUTA academic journey in 1999 at the Department of Biology as Lecturer 1. In 2002, he crossed to the Department of Microbiology as a Senior Lecturer where he rose through the ranks to the grade of Professor in 2007. Since he joined the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), he has held several administrative positions including Postgraduate Coordinator, Head of Department of Microbiology for two terms, Acting Dean School of Sciences, member of the University Senate, member of University’s Appointments and Promotions Committee, as well as Chairman and member of many University’s committees.
